Northway Rapid Rail (NRR) is a concept regional commuter rail system that would serve the Lower Adirondacks and Capital Region in Upstate New York. NRR has 3 lines and 27 stations in Warren, Washington, Saratoga, Albany, Schenectady, and Rensselaer counties providing fast and reliable transportation for work, recreation, and tourism. NRR also connects to major transportation hubs like Albany International Airport, Amtrak stations, and regional bus services such as Greyhound and Trailways.
The names of the lines are an homage to local history. The Mohican Line, named in honor of the Native American tribe that originally inhabited the upper Hudson River Valley, the Beverwyck Line, named in honor of the original Dutch name of of Albany, and the Solomon Northup Line, named in honor of Fort Edward native and the author of Twelve Years a Slave.
A major public transportation project like this will probably never come to fruition due to funding and the area being heavily car-centric, but it’s a good idea to dream about.
